North Carolina I-House

 Location: Aberdeen, NC
 Client: Private
 Status: Unbuilt

DESCRIPTION

This project for a family seeking to build a self-sufficient, land-based lifestyle in rural North Carolina is sited within a prototypical Piedmont pine-grove on a gentle north facing slope overlooking a beaver pond with pastureland to the west. The form takes on a contemporary interpretation of beloved North Carolina vernaculars - the I-house - with a two story volume bookended by chimney masses oriented cross-grain towards the water - and a dogtrot - formed by its intersection with a low-slung outbuilding that serves as a workshop and yoga studio. Together this L-shaped configuration of volumes defines a courtyard with views oriented towards the pond and out across the pastureland, with a service spine turned against the road and eastern approach for privacy.
